I woke up this morning even more confused than I was last night about Kevin Ware’s decision to commit to Central Florida. UCF is not a bad program by any means, but when you consider Ware’s other options, his decision seems quite bizarre to me.
Rick Pitino or Donnie Jones?
Rick Pitino is the only coach in college basketball history to take three different teams to a final four. Donnie Jones has never made an NCAA tournament appearance. Rick Pitino has played in 5 final four’s and has one national championship. The farthest Jones has went in the post-season is a CIT quarterfinal appearance.
KFC Yum Center or UCF Arena?
The UCF arena is actually a very nice place to play, but it still doesn’t compare to the KFC Yum Center. UCF’s average home attendance in 2010 was 5,411. The average attendance in the KFC Yum Center was 19,397.
Louisville or Orlando?
There is no denying that Orlando is an absolutely beautiful place, and is one of the fastest growing cities in the country. However, college basketball is irrelevant there. In Louisville these guys are treated like superstars. Kevin Ware can walk around the streets of Orlando and no one will likely know who he is.
Big East or C-USA?
The Big East has been arguably the best conference in college basketball for the past three seasons. Conference USA has been irrelevant since Louisville, Depaul, Cincinnati, Marquette, and South Florida left in 2005. The Big East sent 11 teams to the NCAA tournament in 2011. Conference USA sent just two. One of those teams was blown out by more than 20 points in the play-in game.
Maybe I am a homer, but I think it’s no brainer. Not only does it not make sense that he chose UCF over Louisville, but the timing is bizarre as well. Ware announced he would not be coming to Louisville just two days before he would arrive in the city for the Derby Festival Classic.
I hope he doesn’t expect a warm welcome from Card Nation.
