According to a report from Jeff Greer of the Courier-Journal, former Louisville star Russ Smith will be returning to the NBA Developmental League.
In July Smith signed with Galatasaray Odeabank in Istanbul, Turkey. His one year deal was reportedly worth nearly $1 million. Unfortunately for Smith, things didn’t work out in Turkey. He and the club recently parted ways.
Smith will rejoin the Delaware 87ers, which is where he finished the 2016 season after being waived by the Memphis Grizzlies. On March 23, he set a D-League scoring record with 65 points on 24-of-42 shooting from the field in a 140–129 loss to the Canton Charge.
After graduating from UofL in 2014, Smith was taken in the second round of the NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, but the pick was immediately traded to New Orleans. Halfway through his rookie season Smith was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies.
After drawing interest from a handful of NBA teams to join their summer league roster, Smith ended up playing for the Portland Trailblazers. In four summer league games, Smith averaged 8.3 points.
