Don’t take this the wrong way, but I miss you! I have to apologize to you because I obviously took you for granted. When I first heard the news of your broken finger, I thought it would be a blow to the team, but I figured the Cards would be able to maintain. However, that is clearly not the case. I underestimated how much physical toughness you bring to this team. At times you don’t provide a whole lot of scoring in the up-tempo style of play, but you help this team in so many ways other than scoring.
Earlier this morning a little birdie shared with me an interesting stat that made me want to throw up. Some of you may already be aware of this, but despite not playing in 5 of the Cards 14 games Rakeem Buckles still has 8 more rebounds than any other player on the team. It’s tough to say that the Cards would have won if Buckles had played against UK and Nova, but he obviously would have helped a lot on the glass. In fact, if you look at the stats, when Rock is playing everyone rebounds better. Before Buckles’s injury Terrence Jennings was averaging right under 6 rebounds and game and in the four games since he is averaging just 2. You can blame that on his minutes being reduced, but I think it’s more of Buckles blocking everyone out and TJ just using his long arms to grab the ball.
Fortunately, I am hearing Rock could be back as early as Feb. 8th when the Cards host Depaul. However, until then the rest of the guys on the team really need to step it up on the boards. Beau Zach Smith and Joseph N’sima could have grabbed more rebounds than Van Treese and Jennings did against Nova.
Rock, if you’re out there I just want you to know that I am sorry for taking you for granted. It will not happen again. Get well soon. We need you more than ever.
