After three seasons away from the sport former Louisville head basketball coach Rick Pitino will be making his return to college basketball in 2020-21.
News broke over the weekend that Pitino had been hired as the next head coach at Iona College in New Rochelle, New York.
“I am delighted to welcome Rick Pitino to Gael Nation,” said Iona Director of Athletics Matthew Glovaski in a statement on Saturday. “Rick is a Hall of Fame coach who has won at the highest levels and he is committed to leading our student-athletes and our program to national prominence. He brings passion and energy and shares our desire to build a winning program that will make our community proud.”
Pitino wasn’t initially able to find basketball coaching employment after being fired by the University of Louisville in September of 2017. He resurfaced in the basketball world in December of 2018 when he was hired by Panathinaikos. a pro club in Greece. After taking over mid-season, Pitino went on to win a Greek Cup and the Greek Basket League championship.
Iona is a private catholic school that competes in the MAAC. The Gaels went 12-17 in 2019-20, which led to Tim Cluess stepping down as head coach.<
