At a press conference earlier this afternoon, Rick Pitino announced the addition of three coaches to his staff: Tim Fuller, Mark Lieberman and former University of Louisville player David Padgett.
Tim Fuller will take over as assistant coach after recently working with Nike. Fuller is a hot name on the AAU circuit and has close relationships with NBA All-Stars Chris Paul and Rajon Rondo. In the video below Fuller describes his close relationship with Louisville native Rajon Rondo.
Mark Lieberman will take over as the director of basketball operations. Lieberman comes from Pace high school in Miami and is one of the winningest coaches in Miami-Dade County history. After 14 seasons at Pace he left the school with a 343-92 career record. He led the Spartans to seven state final four appearances overall, including six in a row from 2003-2008. Lieberman also coached Peyton Siva in the 2009 McDonalds All American Game.
David Padgett will serve as the assistant strength coach under Ray Ganong. Padgett spent the 09-10 season playing in Spain, he averaged 10 points and 7 rebounds for U.B. LA PALMA.
During todays press conference Pitino also confirmed that Memphis guard Roburt Sallie has signed with the Cardinals.
Now to the negative news…According to Coach Pitino, senior shooting guard Preston Knowles status with the team is officially “in limbo”. Pitino says Knowles is not kicked off the team, but “has a lot of work to do to prove he deserves to be a part of this program” – Rick did not go into close detail but he did say that this has nothing to do with the incident that occurred last month when P.K. had a scuffle with a x girlfriends step father. I really hope this is something that was made public to motivate Preston and get his head in the right place, but he has without a doubt made some poor choices over the last couple months. Preston is currently taking summer classes, but other than school he has not spent a lot of time with the rest of the team. Lets hope P.K. can get it together, he is our only senior next year other than transfer Rob Sallie.
Other negative news is the eligibility status of 2010 commit Justin Coleman. It is still not 100% certain if Coleman will qualify but Pitino was quoted as saying “Coleman has a tough row to hoe academically. Most people seem to think the results of Coleman’s ACT test will determine his eligibility, but after talking to some folks close to the Huntingon Prep program, even with an improved ACT score Coleman still faces issues with the clearing house.
I will try to upload the audio from Rick’s press conference later this evening. I will also add more information on Justin Coleman’s academic issues.<
