The UofL vs. UK football rivalry isn’t nearly as heated and historic as the basketball side, but there’s no doubt Card Nation and Big Blue Nation are still each other’s biggest rival on the gridiron.
A better question would be who are Louisville’s biggest rivals other than Kentucky?
There are some obvious choices, but thanks to a study conducted by KnowRivalary.com we have a better idea.
To dumb it down for you, they surveyed football fans from 122 FBS fan bases giving them 100 “rivalry points” to allocate across opponents.
Cincinnati and West Virginia are the obvious two that come to mind when you think of Louisville football rivals outside of Kentucky. The Bearcats came in as the second biggest rival with 17.07 points while the Mountaineers got just 3.8.
Personally, I’d allocate the points much differently. Kentucky 70 points – West Virginia 20 – Cincinnati 10.
Maybe it’s just me, but I have more animosity against West Virginia football than I do Cincinnati. The Cards have played Cincy way more times than they’ve played WVU, but the games between the Mountaineers and the Cards seem to be more memorable. They also still owe us a trophy. The Braxton Trophy was created in 1989 and would go to the winner of Louisville and West Virginia. Louisville won the last meeting between the two in 2011, but for some reason West Virginia wouldn’t hand over the trophy.<
