The University of Louisville athletic community learned of some horrific news on Sunday.
Football signee Dexter Rentz Jr. was shot and killed in his hometown of Orlando, Florida, on Saturday evening.
“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Dexter Rentz,” Scott Satterfield said in an official statement. “He was a great young man who had a contagious personality, and was able to light up a room with his smile. He was a great kid to be around and he will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Rentz family during this extremely difficult time.”
Rentz is one of four people that were shot, but the 18-year-old as of now is the only one that has lost his life.
At about 11:19 p.m. Saturday, police responded to a report of shots fired in the area of Elese Street and Deerock Drive. Four people were shot, with Rentz the only victim who has died from his wounds.
Police detained a person driving away from the area of the shooting, but OPD later reported it was not related to the incident.
Rentz verbally committed to Louisville in June of 2019 and signed with the Cardinals during the early signing period.
Rest in Peace, Dexter Rentz Jr. Thoughts and prayers are with the Rentz family at this time.<
