We’ve known for the past few months that Rick Pitino in the Louisville Cardinals were expected to renew their long time rivalry with the University Memphis, but details of the match-up were unclear.

Through an open records request, the Memphis Commercial Appeal has learned that the Cards and the Tigers will meet on Dec. 16 at Madison Square Garden in New York as part of the Gotham Classic.

The two programs haven’t met since 2014 when Louisville was a member of the American Athletic Conference. Both sides agreed to a non-conference series once UofL left to join the Atlantic Coast Conference, but the game was pushed back two years.

Louisville and Memphis have played 89 times since 1948 with Louisville leading the all time series 53-46. Rick Pitino will be going up against one of his former assistant coaches when the two teams meet in December. Tubby Smith is entering his second season in Memphis.
