Louisville Has Played The Toughest Schedule In College Basketball

Chris Humphrey

Strength of schedule is one of the most important components to a team’s NCAA tournament resume. With just two games left in the regular season, it’s safe to say Rick Pitino and the Louisville Cardinals strength of schedule ranking won’t be a problem.

According to CBS Sports, Louisville’s strength of schedule is now ranked No. 1.

2016 STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
RPI
RANK SCHOOL W-L SOS RANK RPI
1 Louisville 23-6 0.6090 4 0.6563
2 Baylor 22-6 0.6051 8 0.6487
3 Nebraska 11-16 0.6044 87 0.5458
4 Vanderbilt 16-13 0.6037 48 0.5824
5 Virginia 19-9 0.6015 19 0.6197
6 Xavier 18-11 0.6013 26 0.6048
7 Pittsburgh 15-14 0.6009 63 0.5629
8 Florida 23-6 0.5985 6 0.6528
9 Stanford 13-14 0.5968 75 0.5560
10 Tennessee 14-14 0.5959 66 0.5620

With two games remaining Louisville’s RPI is at No. 4. The Cards have a 6-6 record against teams with a top 50 RPI, including three wins over the top twenty (No. 7 Kentucky, No. 13 Duke & No. 20 Purdue).

The most impressive aspect of Louisville’s tournament resume may be the quality of their six losses. All six teams that beat Louisville were ranked at the time of the game and are still currently ranked in the top 25 of the AP Poll. Louisville is the only team in the country that doesn’t have a loss to an unranked team.
