Bobby Petrino and the Louisville football program have been on a recruiting hot streak over the last several weeks as they round the corner heading towards the season opener against Purdue.
Earlier this month UofL landed a commitment from three star defensive linemen Jarrett Jackson who chose the Cardinals over Florida State. Louisville then landed a surprise commitment from former Nebraska commit Manual Allen, a four star wide receiver out of the state of California who is currently ranked 155 overall according to Rivals.
Then this week, the staff received their 10th commitment from the state of Florida as two star athlete Chatarius “Tutu” Atwell committed to the Cards over Illinois, Marshall, and South Florida.
The coaching staff has been on fire in the state of Florida over the last few months landing highly touted players left and right such as Trenell Troutman, Yassir Abdullah, Marcus Riley, Chandler Jones, Robert Hicks, Jarrett Jackson, and others. Landing big time talent from the state of Florida isn’t new for Louisville, as its played a large role in the resurgence of the program over the last eight years.
Since 2010 UofL has landed 195 total recruits, including this year’s recruits, 60 of those players have been from the state of Florida, and 20 hail from the Miami area. Many of these players come with highly recognizable names including Teddy Bridgewater, Eli Rogers, Gerod Holliman, Calvin Pryor, Charles Gaines, Lamar Jackson, James Burgess, Brandon Radcliff, Chucky Williams and plenty others. Needless to say, the up and coming high school players in South Florida are seeing what the Louisville football program is doing with the talent from their hometowns and it’s playing a big role in their recruitment.
While it’s easy to point out what star players like Teddy Bridgewater, Lamar Jackson, Calvin Pryor, and Eli Rogers have done for Louisville’s recruiting, none of that would be possible without having a great staff like the one currently assembled by Bobby Petrino. Coaches such as Curt Dennison, Kolby Smith, Pete Nochta, Lorenzo Ward, Nick Petrino and now newly hired Stephen Field have all played a huge role in reopening the Florida pipeline. Probably none more so than Coach Field who was hired this offseason from Florida A&M, partially due to his relationships in the Miami area. Coach Field spent a lot of his career coaching for big time high school programs in the Miami area such as Miami Northwestern, Glades Central, Deerfield Beach, & Miami Central and is now leveraging those relationships into commitments. The impact he has had on the program is something that we are seeing in the Class of 2018, and will continue to see in 2019, 2020 and beyond. As mentioned earlier, 10 players out of the current 17 commits for the 2018 class hail from the Sunshine state and there will likely be several more in the fold by the time National Signing Day rolls around in 2018.
Louisville currently holds the 26th best recruiting class in the country according to Rivals.com
