I know South Florida is now a 6-11 team, but anytime you can go on the road and get a Big East win, it means a lot. It was great to see this Cardinal team not get frazzled by the late run that the Bulls made.
Before the season started did you ever think we would see Gorgui Dieng and Stephan Van Treese starting in the front court? Both of these guys have been playing great in the last couple of games. SVT put together a new a career high performance in both rebounds and points. After grabbing a career high 10 rebounds on Wednesday against Seton Hall, Van Treese followed up with another career high 14 boards. He also had 12 points including two big dunks. Gorgui had 10 points, 3 rebounds, and blocked 5 shots.
Despite only playing 16 minutes due to early foul trouble, Preston Knowles had a pretty impressive stat-line. He finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals. Not bad for just 16 minutes of action. His two three balls down the stretch were huge.
Peyton Siva also had a pretty impressive stat-line, but I would like to see him improve his free throw shooting a little bit. Siva finished with 9 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds, with just two turnovers.
Mike Marra came in and did exactly what this team needs him to do. Knock down open three’s. Marra was 3-7 from downtown and finished with 11 points. He also added 4 assists. It’s nice to have a guy like Mika come off the bench to give this team a threat from outside.
Terrence Jennings had probably one of his better performances of the year. T.J. only grabbed two rebounds, but he ran the floor and got a lot of easy baskets. He finished with 12 points, including two big free throws late in the game. It is now almost a given that he isn’t going to be a big factor on the glass, but he can still help this team in other ways. Not many big man can run the floor like Jennings.
Chris Smith and Kyle Kuric both had a rough afternoon from the field. Smith finished with 9 points, but was 2-9 from the floor. For the first time this year I thought Smith forced a couple of bad shots. Kuric didn’t play bad, he just didn’t play much. He only got 12 minutes of action off the bench.<
