UofL 23 EKU 13 – Cardinal Connect Post Game Notes

First and foremost, congrats to Charlie Strong, with his first of hopefully many wins to come. However, I wouldn’t exactly call this a pretty win. I think we some good things from the team today, but I also feel like we saw a lot of bad things.

Good:

  • Doug Beaumont was able to make his first career appearance in the end zone. The 42 yard touchdown pass from Adam Froman, was well overdue. Doug exploded in the first half, for 4 receptions, and 83 yards, and a touchdown. Early in the second half, Doug jogged into the locker room, for what was thought to be a minor injury, he did return, but only played briefly.
  • “Big Pretty”, (Rodney Gnat) came to play. Gnat had a game high 4 sacks, forced a fumble, that he later recovered. I think, Gnat might have earned himself a starting job after todays performance.
  • Other than the awful interception in the second half, Adam Froman played well. Fro, was 15-23, 219 yards, with a touchdown and an interception. Pretty solid numbers, but both interceptions he has thrown this year have been pitiful to say the least.
  • A healthy dose of both Victor Anderson and Bilal Powell, will be key to the success of this years team. Powell, had 16 carries for 92 yards, and a couple of touchdowns. Anderson had 143 all-purpose yards, with 11 carries for 67 yards, 2 receptions for 22 yards, and a 59 yard kick return.
  • Josh Chichester, was involved today, which makes me happy. Josh had some of his usual drops, but I still think he is too talented, to not be on the field. Chichester, is a huge target over the middle and I think he can be very effective, if he can hold onto the ball. We have seen the same type of fumble way too many times in the last couple years.

Bad:

  • Despite the defense holding the Colonel offense scoreless, until late the second half, I thought Louisville gave up a lot of big plays. I still think Coach Strong is doing a lot of substitutions, to find the right guys. Hopefully after these first two games, Strong has a better idea who he will start.
  • The drought continues, as the Cardinals have now went 20 consecutive games without at least four touchdowns.  The 23 points explosion in the second quarter was probably the best football we have seen from this program in a few years, but getting shut out the other three-quarters was bad. Third conversions really hurt some of the Cardinal drives today. Louisville was 2-10 on third down conversions today.
  • The Cardinals had 11 penalties for 100 yards today, which reminds me too much of the Kragthorpe days. Not only is 100 yards a lot to give up, but it seemed that the penalties came at the worst possible time.
  • Josh Belamy, caught two balls today for 22 yards, but overall I thought his debut performance was poor. Belamy had quite a few dropped passes and some mental mistakes on special teams. I think Josh may have been bothered by some nerves. Coach Strong is very confident in Belamy, so hopefully we see a better performance from Josh next week at Oregon State.
  • I am sure a lot of you may not agree with me on this one, but in my opinion, pooring the water cooler on Coach Strong after the win today was bad. I am just as happy as everyonelse about Coach Strong getting his first win, but really? We beat a bad EKU team, that shut us out in the second half.
