The news that Louisville kicker Blanton Creque was out for the season with a torn ACL was heartbreaking news for players, coaches and fans alike. No one wants to see any player suffer a season-ending injury but knowing that this was a de facto end to Creque’s Louisville career—and perhaps beyond—was even more upsetting.
He ends his tenure as a Cardinal as one of the program’s best kickers. Certainly, the most accurate, making just over 82 percent of his kicks. He’s also in the top-3 of almost every kicking record the school has.
But the numbers are only one aspect of what Blanton Creque brought to Louisville. He was a Kentucky boy, growing up in Shelbyville and kicking as well as playing baseball and golf at Martha Layne Collins High School. He made the all-state team his junior and senior years.
Redshirting in 2015, he was the starting kicker from 2016 onwards. In 2016-2017, he was always there to score that one extra point after Lamar Jackson and Co. scored another unbelievable touchdown. And if by some chance a touchdown was not score, Creque was there to kick a field goal of almost any length, ensuring that we got at least three-points out of a drive.
And in that long local nightmare that was the 2018 season, when nobody knew who would or could score anything, our stalwart kicker was there to put up at least three and prevent a shutout (provided he was within his range, of course).
Truly he had taken up the mantle of the legendary legs that had kicked before him, like Art Carmody, who attended the Virginia game.
But his legs weren’t the only thing that Creque brought to the field. There was also his heart. On kickoffs, he was not content to just boot it and retreat to a sideline. He sought after opposing returners and tried to make tackles. And it was in the process of doing just that in the fourth quarter of the Virginia game that he suffered the fateful injury.
With Creque out, it falls on Ryan Chalifoux to take over kicking duties. Cards fans have seen next to nothing of the sophomore save for the one PAT he made once Creque went down, but who knows? Perhaps young Chalifoux will be the next in line of great Louisville kickers.
Just maybe stay away from ballcarriers, yeah?<
