University of Louisville athletics director Vince Tyra has announced that twelve senior staffers along with all head coaches from the school’s 21 sports are taking voluntary pay cuts due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Along with the salary cuts, Tyra has agreed to forgo his $150K bonus this year and next year (total $300K). Tyra said the total savings from the salary cut and his bonuses would be roughly $1.75 million.
A huge chunk of the savings will be coming from the school’s top paid employees. Chris Mack has a base salary of $4 million, Scott Satterfield earns $3.25 million, Jeff Walz makes $1.475 million Dan McDonnell earns $1 million. Their 10% cuts would equate to savings of $972,500.
WDRB reports that some of the school’s athletic programs could be cut by 30 percent with significant reductions to their travel budgets.
During Thursday’s teleconference Tyra discussed a variety of things, including how the pandemic could impact football season, spring athletes who now have an extra eligibility and much more.<
