Mathiang helped Louisville to a 79-63 win against Western Kentucky in the Cardinals’ only game of the week. He scored a career-high 13 points, going 5-of-5 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line, and added five rebounds and a block against the Hilltoppers.
On the season, Mangok is averaging 4.6 points and 4.0 rebounds in 16-minutes per game. Following Louisville’s loss to North Carolina, Rick Pitino announced that he planned on sticking with Mathiang as the starter and “live with his mistakes.” Although he’s still young and inexperienced, slowly but surely, we’re starting to see glimpses of just how good Mathiang can be.
I suspect that we’ll soon see more of Montrezl Harrell and Chane Behanan on the court at the same time, however Mathiang will still have a big role for this year’s team. It’s hard to argue that he isn’t the most important piece, considering he provides a shot blocking presence that no one else can.
