The Louisville basketball program had their annual tip-off luncheon on Monday at the downtown Louisville Marriott. The annual luncheon is one of the many events this time of year that really gets the fan base in basketball mode.
Coach Pitino prepares an entertaining speech each and every year, however this year’s was a little more special than others, considering the Cards are coming off of a national championship. While most coaches tend to shoot down high expectations this time of year, Rick Pitino did the exact opposite on Monday.
“We are one year away from a mini-dynasty,” Pitino told the crowd at the Marriott.
“If these players could ever rise to the occasion once again, win another conference championship and get back to the Final Four, boy would that be unbelievable for them. When you show great humility you’re always hungry to do it again. When you don’t have humility, think you’ve arrived and you embrace it.”
While admitting that it wouldn’t be an easy task, Pitino seems more than confident that he has a team that has what it takes to get back to the Final Four for a third year in a row.
“We’re a little behind right now, but these guys are totally committed and they’ve totally bought in to trying to do it again,” Pitino says. “Does it take a little bit of luck, sure it does. But it takes more than luck, it takes talent, focus and it takes that humility and these guys have it. If any team can do it three times in a row, it’s this group of guys.”
It sounds like we’re in for another special season.
