At this time last week, we were expecting to hear an update from junior college guard Sam Cassell Jr.
The son of former NBA All Star Sam Cassell Sr., took an official visit to Louisville last weekend and told the media on Thursday that he is down to just Louisville and Connecticut.
A week has gone by and we still haven’t heard an announcement from Cassll Jr., and apparently there is a good reason for it. Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.com is reporting that Louisville is no longer pursuing the junior college combo guard.
I’m not sure exactly what Pitino and his staff decided to back off at the last minute, but I can’t say I disagree with the decision. Cassell Jr. is a talented player, but Louisville is clearly loaded at the guard position and I’m not sure he would play over any of the current guards.
Pitino still has a few scholarships available in the 2014 class and it’ll be interesting to see who else he decides to pursue. Five-star forward Trey Lyles is obviously still in the picture. The Indianapolis native is down to just Louisville and Kentucky, however he’ll likely wait until the spring to make a decision.
Don’t be surprised if Pitino and his staff shift all of their attention to the 2015 class when it comes to back-court prospects.
