Maybe it’s just me, but after each of the last few basketball seasons, there has been some talk about how much longer Rick Pitino will continue coaching. In fact, there was some speculation a couple of years ago that Pitino may retire after his brief work as an analyst for ESPN and CBS during the 2011 NCAA basketball tournament.
During a post-game press conference last season Pitino made a comment about coaching until the end of this contract which is in 2017. Never did he say he was going to stop coaching, but somehow Pitino’s comments turned into the national media assuming that Pitino was surely going to retire after 2017. Coach Pitino put that type of talk to rest last night when he joined Jeff Goodman of CBS Sports on his SiriusXM radio show .
“I’m probably going to sign an extension somewhere down the road,” Pitino tells Goodman. “I’m gonna stay in it as long as I’m healthy. … I’m gonna stay in it as long as I can.”
I know I’m not the only one who has noticed a re-energized Pitino over the last year. It’ll be interesting to see how big of an extension he will sign. I strongly believe Rick Pitino will be the coach at Louisville until he decides he doesn’t want to be.
