Big East Will Look Into A Name Change

According to Curtis Eichelberger of BusinessWeek.com, the Big East conference will entertain the idea of a name change once the league’s realignment is complete.

“The unintended consequences of adding new schools is that all of a sudden the Big East is a national conference,” former interim commissioner Joe Bailey said at the Bloomberg Sports Business Summit Thursday.

“It extends to four time zones in major markets. In one sense, it almost represents the United States in that diversity.”

I’m not crazy about the Big East making a name change, but I suppose it is necessary, considering the league now spans over four different time zones.

Any suggestions for a new conference name?

  1. How about simply, Big Conference? Simple yet effective.

  2. They should call it …. Conference of America or th The Big American Conference

  3. If the B!0 can have divisions called the Legends and Leaders, I don’t see why the Big East can’t take a page out of that book and call themselves the Champions Conference, its not that much more arrogant than what the B10 has already done.

  4. What about the Coast to Coast Conference, or even the Big Compas Conference

  5. I’m all for bringing back the old “Metro Conference” name. Nearly all of the new Big East members will be city schools:
    Louisville
    Cincinnati
    Memphis
    Houston
    Boise St.
    San Diego St.
    Rutgers (NYC)
    Temple (Philly)
    USF (Tampa)
    UCF (Orlando)
    SMU (Dallas)

The two that don’t really fit the “Metro” name would be UConn and Navy – and even Navy is on the outskirts of Baltimore. “Metro Conference” would definately give the league an identity (since it certainly won’t have a geographic one).
