According to multiple media outlets, the Big East has named CBS Sports Vice President Mike Aresco as the league’s new commissioner. Mark Blaudschun of ajerseyguy.com broke the news earlier this morning. You can expect an official announcement from the league at some point this afternoon.

Aresco’s role at CBS was to oversee all college programming for both CBS Sports and CBS College Sports Network. He recently negotiated the network’s 15-year Southeastern Conference agreement to televise SEC football and basketball. Aresco joined CBS from ESPN in 2000 where he was responsible for overseeing the acquisition, scheduling and development of long-term strategies for all of ESPN and ESPN2′s college sports properties.

This league has a lot of work to do in regards to improving its reputation, but this is a homerun hire, in my opinion. Aresco’s work with college sports television speaks for itself. This is definitely a step in the right direction for the Big East.
