Charlie Strong and Joker Phillips spoke to the media this afternoon at the 2012 Governor’s Cup luncheon at the Cardinal Club. Former Louisville players Dwayne Woodruff and Browning Nagle were honored at the luncheon. Lee Corso was also in attendance.
Quotes from Coach Strong
“I have no Makers Mark bottles so don’t ask me.”
“Whomever you play in the first week of the season, you have to be prepared to play.”
“More of our fans are doing all of the talking right now.”
“There are guys that have been a part of national championships, so we’re hoping with that experience on this staff it will carry over to our players to not get cocky and just go work.”
“As coaches we have to make sure that we don’t slip at practice and keep the same work ethic that got us where we’re at right now.”
“Kentucky has won four out of the last five; still they have the advantage over us. The win in Lexington was big. They’re both young football teams, both teams have to develop leadership early.”
“We play three short weeks this year.”
“A lot of guys need to develop leadership, it’s not just Teddy. We’re lucky Teddy had to grow up like he did last year.”
“Teddy knows that the success of this football team is going to go on how successful he is.”
“We’re the only two teams that are playing that Sunday, so it’s great exposure, recruits will be able to see both teams.”
“ We’ve been tracking down the trash talking pretty quickly. We always find out. The players have to be very careful what they say.”

What a difference in coaches. Strong looked at his coaches in attendance at Gov. Cup and stated their names and position title. Joker had to be prompted to even name his staff, then had to look down at a piece of paper to reel them off. Strong is evidently more prepared and more enthused about this season.
