Illinois State University announced yesterday afternoon that their men’s basketball program will travel to face Louisville on Dec. 1 at the KFC Yum! Center. The Redbirds finished 21-14 overall and 10-10 in the Missouri Valley Conference. They had their season ended by Stanford in the second round of the NIT tournament.
“I want to prepare our team for tough conference play and put our program and team in position to make the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid or winning the (Missouri Valley Conference) tournament,” said new ISU coach Dan Muller. “You want to get exposure for your program.
“(This) will give us the opportunity to play against one of the best coaches in the country and one of the best teams.”
This will be the second all-time meeting between ISU and Louisville, which was a Missouri Valley Conference member from 1963-74. The Redbirds lost to No. 16-ranked Louisville, 117-107, on March 4, 1974 at Freedom Hall in Louisville.
ISU Athletic Director Gary Friedman likely played a role in putting this game together. Prior to being the A.D. at IUS, Friedman was the Senior Associate A.D. at the University of Louisville from 2009-2011.
